K4WAR History

  • 1949: K4WAR starts on Camp Gordon

  • 1951: Signed up 1000th member

  • 1952: Featured in Signal Magazine

  • ~1990s: MARS program ceased operation on Fort Gordon to include K4WAR

  • 2000: Edwin Dodds, last operator of MARS station, registers K4WAR as trustee

  • 2010: Edwin Dodds renews K4WAR with FCC

  • 2018 to 2019: Officers and NCOs from Cyber and the Signal School discuss HF radio and importance ham radio has in providing an activity to gain experiential knowledge amongst students

  • 2019: Five hams/instructors on post meet at the base of Signal Towers. After researching clubs it was found that K4WAR is still actively registered. A visit with Mr. Dodds took place in December ‘19 to ask about starting the club back up and using the callsign again

  • 2020: Club revitalized under the name David M. Fiedler Memorial Amateur Radio Club in honor of one of the most influential signaleers on radio communications

  • Currently: We are attempting to preserve the history and revitalize K4WAR so it can continue to provide a great service to Fort Gordon and the community
